Swing and Miss!!! USA's Surgeon General's Oversight

Social planning is not enough for our hearts and minds

Dear Friend,

Immediately on clicked on the link this week declaring the Surgeon General is talking about loneliness and isolation.

Of course, I feared there would be a lot of policy talk and not much in the way of real social connection, but I hoped to be wrong. To be fair, I love the idea of creating and using more public spaces and gatherings. Studies show that we feel more connected just by being around people.

But, I did not see the golden word mentioned.

Friend.

You and I are on a different type of journey than the Surgeon General describes. I started writing about loneliness and the particular problems facing men a few years ago at the beginning of the pandemic. The statistics about heart trouble, suicide, obesity, and much more are overwhelming.

Men’s Friendship Factor is an answer to the question, “Men are lonely. So what? What will make a change?”

Neither of us is a national leader, surgeon general, or even a local politician. You and I are men who can make deeper friendships. One step deeper—you and I can teach other men how to make their friendships better.

Maybe we will meet more guys and new friends with the initiatives of the Surgeon General and other national leaders around the world.

Don’t forget.

Friends are the social network and community we long for in this life.
