Lots and Lots of Rocks

Filling Holes Can Be Hard Work

I hate potholes.

I really hate potholes in dirt roads. I really hate potholes in dirt roads during the monsoon/rainy season.

Two days ago we had yet another heavy rain storm that removed portions of our driveway/road. We made the road this year pouring several loads of red clay and gravel. For most of the year, it’s served us well.

But every big rain causes a washout that the boys and I repair.

One washout area required us to add another dump truck load of dirt and line a side of the road with rocks. The past few times, the road has held up well and we move washed-out gravel back to the road every two weeks.

However—a big hole developed at the end of the driveway and it took two wheelbarrow loads of rocks to fill it. Driving over this same spot caused it to become a sinkhole. That area gets extra water and is mostly compacted sand and clay.

When the rain comes in your friend’s life are you ready to help with the repair?

Here are a few things to consider:

  • Some roads can’t be moved. How do you help your friend make regular repairs? Can you suggest making changes in another area to keep the storm from washing over him in the same way?

  • We all have a sinkhole (or two). What parts of your friend’s life are structurally different? Does he recognize his weakness? What rocks will help make his weakness stronger?

  • Big work today can make it easier next year. How do you give your friend hope? Are you speaking words of encouragement?

Taking leadership in your friendship means planning for heavy rains to fall on your friend and your friendship. Make sure you are ready and willing—even if you have to haul rocks.

Friends share weaknesses with help not hurt.
