3 Forms of "Best" Friends
More Than One Way To Have BFFs: BFF Series #3
⛽ Hey, Friend! You’re Doin’ Great! ⛽
Don’t get hung up on “Best Friend” as a sacred label. Here are 3 ways to think about your best friends and appreciate all they bring to your life.
Best as “Favorite”
What’s your favorite movie?
Aside from my buddy Kent who immediately answers “Citizen Kane,” most people I know stop, think, then rattle off 5 or so movies. Each movie they list has an aspect they appreciate. Using the word “favorite,” also a comparison word, allows a person to list a few good options.
What’s your best movie?
See, it just doesn’t have the same creative spark.
Reframe “Best Friends” to “Favorite Friends” and the job suddenly becomes easier. You should have favorite friends for different reasons. Embrace it.
Take Away: Think of your best friends like favorite movies. It’s good to have a few and among many genres.
Best as “MVP, Favorite Player, and/or GOAT”
Sports-minded men, this is for you. The endless discussions combining statistics, with fandom, and personal enjoyment when discussing players in a given sport are legendary. Usually, a person picks a criterion or standard and then tries to apply that logic among players.
Take Away: Think of your best friends as your starting five for basketball or nine like a baseball team.
Best as “Dave Letterman’s ‘Top 10”
Dave Letterman made an entertainment career with his Top 10 List. Some lists were better than others, but you could always count on Dave to have a Top 10 List.
Take Away: Your Top 10 List of Best Friends might not feel that great to you. No problem. Make your list and know that you keep the best friends in the top slots of 1, 2, and 3.
Make a list, at least a mental list, of your best friends. Think about what they add to your life.
Write a text, email, chat, or some form of a note.
“I’m thankful for your friendship. You add ___________________ to my life.”
